Day 1: Roaming free in the wild wild east

Not smart My night ended at 3am this morning because I had, as the simpleton I am, cable tied my case shut in which were my shower supplies.  Thus I first had to find a way to break the cable tie. After a sweaty and frustrating hour I succeeded and took a shower, emailed my dad and passed out. Day #1 of the BlaineAlex Hong Kong pillaging I was woken up this morning by a Blaine and Lex at 07h45. Blaine has had 2 hours sleep the previous night since he just got off his one-way flight from South Africa. Each of us took a shower and Lex joined us again to give us a tour of his ENT department of the Prince of Wales Hospital. Lex sponsored us our first meal in Hong Kong at the Prince of Wales cafeteria. We ordered an entirely rice-based meal with ‘dim sum’, a nice ricey pastry. Lex and myself, your Dim Sum was the best Blaine Blaine not knowing whether to order the    象形     or 危 We then went to City One mall to get an octopus card, which allo...

Airport security: "Please come to the back room with us"

Alive in Hong Kong! What an eventful past 19 hours of pure travelling these have been.  Chronological sequence of interesting events: I wake up in the airplane after 3 hours of sleep with the sun blazing into my eyes: 5am. Seems like the sky is the place to be for aspiring earlybirds yet chronic sleep-in'ers like me. After this 1st 8 hour flight I caught a connecting flight in Dubai to Hong Kong (with no time to dilly dally). I quickly hopped onto another plane for 7 hours long.  After a while I started realising these things: Just as your starting to digest your previous meal, here they come with another. (I'm ok with it) They have no idea what rooibos tea is :( Watching an entire season of 30 Rock on the plane is totally worth missing the sleep for Chinese babies are most definitely the cutest beings alive, where does one buy those again? I was fortunate enough to (on both flights) have the seats next to me vacant. The 2nd flight I scored 2 seats when...

D-Day: "Where is Perth!"

So the journey commences. I have been in the terminal for some time now and am waiting for them to start boarding the flight to Dubai, from where I shall reach my connecting flight. There was some confusion earlier concerning a lost little girl in the terminal. Her name is Perth. This led to a lot of frantic running about by the passengers destined to Australia. Statements being thrown around on the intercom were as follows, yet I have been known the exaggerate: "Perth is a little girl" (initially this led to angry mutters from the aussies) "Please can anybody help us to find Perth" (this turned to hushes) "Perth is lost" (stunned silence) The mother in charge of yelling of her child's elegant name succeeded in her task and found her daughter. This was met by applause and a thankfulness that everybody can return to their seats. In other news, I saw a Richard Branson lookalike, speaking on his phone in a Texan accent and being all busines...

"We deem you adequate, foreign citizen"

The cat is officially out of the bag; we are going to the Kong. Blaine messaged me just as I got out of the shower  this morning reading "We're going to Hong Kong biaaaaatch". This led to me issuing a number of jubilant yelps followed by telling my mom and calling up my dad at work. (That reminds me, call granny too). What goes in the bag: iPod Camera Some medical textbook (just to make me feel academic) Bible (to remind me that I am a faithful being) Money and valuables satchel (I really do lose all things with value regularly) Unicycle? (I am contemplating the reward:effort ratio) Pants At 3:37 AM we received our email from valiant Ying from the Chinese embassy giving congrats that our request for Hong Kong visas have been accepted (with honours). We have cut it very fine this time, since our passports shall only be ready for collection on Thursday morning...and my flight leaves Thursday evening. I am certain that credit for this tur...
